Some of you have probably
assumed that the Bylaws committee
faded off into the sunset. This is to
let you know we are alive and well. Our
work has proven to be much more complicated than we originally thought. You should be reassured that through the
process of discussion and constant re-evaluation we have increased our
confidence
that the bylaws revision we will submit to the membership will be
well-crafted
and functional.
One of our concerns has
been the issue of compliance. In other
words, if the Bylaws are the legal
basis for the governance of our Co-op, what happens if they are ignored? This is not a theoretical question. Our current Bylaws are sometimes ignored—and
there are no consequences. To accept
the continuation of this sort of non-compliance after our bylaws
revision is
approved would be a mockery of everything we have worked for. If anyone has any thought or suggestions in
this regard, please get them to me at yollesm@juno.com
or 46 Elm St., Albany, NY 12202.
We are hoping the Board
will include a vote on the proposed
bylaws revision at the Annual Meeting in April. Copies
would be available well before then. We
plan to hold several informal information
sessions so interested members can get their questions answered. We will be asking that the approval vote be
in toto.
